Maggini Violins

Maggini violins, our reproduction included, are slightly larger than those patterned after later violins, such as those by Stradivari, and are known for their beautiful depth in tone and projection that is strong but warm. Some consider their tone dark or somber, but all of the Magginis pack a punch when it comes to projection (i.e. they are loud). It is noteworthy that many of the old instruments by Appalachian master fiddle makers were variations of Magginis like this one, but generally more highly decorated.

Giovanni Paolo Maggini (1580-c. 1630), is considered one the three co-founders of the modern violin as we know it and his instruments are still the most sought-after in the world by all great players, but especially expert fiddlers. Since Maggini only made about 60 instruments, the probability of getting an original is pretty slim. Even well-made copies are hard to come by, so here's your chance to get a good one for less than $3,000.

We also sell the Maggini reproduction as an Octave (aka Baritone) fiddle (restrung with octave strings of course). Magginis are well established for use as octave instruments due to their large size and powerful deep projection--they are actually larger than some small violas.

The instruments we sell also feature intricate but subtle inlay decoration in the deeply flamed backs in the fashion of the most prized Magginis. No two original Magginis are alike. Maggini decorated the backs of many of his instruments with such designs as St. Andrew's Cross, a clover-leaf device, tableaux, medallions, crests, and other motifs. The antinqued Italian type red-brown amber varnish of our reproduction gives this highly decorated instrument a distinguished rather than gawdy look. Some original and reproduction Magginis can be a bit over-the-top on decoration. Trust me, I've played some that push the limits of good taste with thier over-use of abalone and mother-of-pearl (but they still sound great!).
